From 31 March 2025 (or 31 March 2027 for micro-businesses), new waste management rules mean all workplaces in England will be legally required to separate and present waste according to their waste collection arrangements. The following waste types must be properly sorted:
Dry recyclable materials – plastic, metal, glass, paper, and card
Food waste
Black bin waste (residual waste)
If your workplace generates garden waste, you must follow the waste hierarchy and ensure it is recycled or composted if that is the best environmental option.
How to Comply
Workplaces can choose the size of waste containers and the frequency of collections based on their waste volume. You are not required to provide bins for customers. However if you do, you must ensure that recyclable materials, food waste, and general waste are separated correctly.
Who Must Follow These Rules?
Any business or non-domestic premises that produces waste similar to household waste must comply. This includes, but is not limited to:
Offices, retail stores, and warehouses
Restaurants, cafes, and hotels
Schools, universities, and healthcare facilities
Care homes, charities, and places of worship
Penal institutes, public meeting venues, and residential hostels
If you’re unsure whether these rules apply to your business, check the latest legislation for guidance.
